Honey Quality:Demands of the European Union

Original en Español

In 1997 the European Union set the course toward more quality controls implementation on the cared honey.
This year, when discovering chloramphenicol traces in the honey of China, the sophisticated technology of the laboratories found the excuse to separate the Asian giant of the market and to force it to accept its controls.

EDITOR WORDS

Rio Negro - Patagonia Argentina (October of 2002) This is a special "Espacio Apicola" issue. The articles about beekeeping in the Valley of Rio Negro (Black River) and about the standards of the beehives, are practical and attractive.
The Raul Rivera article show something of the American beekeeping that has bigger influence in our country: the fight against bees illnesses. The interview to the director of the Bremen Institute, Cord Lüllmann Dr., shows the other face of this sometimes difficult to balance scales, the constant and growing consumer's quality demand and the battle to maintain the honey in the highest preference betwen natural products.
Beekeepers in Argentina has improved their beehives handling ostensibly in the last years. Until 10 years ago, to open the brood chamber was a taboo for most of the beekeepers, today is the place that defined who grows or who give up.
The extraction rooms improvements and the great development of the industry linked to the sector, were others factors of the products improvements.
We want that the honey price increase stays, it should not only induce us to grow our production, also to invest in the differentiation of our products to reach bigger added value. In this way we are very satisfied for the "Flora Apicola" (bee forage) publicated by Monica Wingenroth dr.
We invite all the beekeepers and investigators that want to diffuse the kindness of their regional beehives products, to meet on the next “Argentine Beekeeping Regions Meeting" during the Api-Expo Rio Cuarto 2003.

Beekeeping and New Pollination Technologies - Engineer Juan Mange - Rio Negro - Patagonia - Argentina
Eng. Juan Mange - Beltran - Rio Negro
At the beginning of the spring "Espacio Apicola" went to the Valley of Rio Negro (Black River) to know and to give through these pages the experience of the beekeepers who go there to develop their brood chambers and to lend pollination services.
We share Mr. Juan Mange during his work moving apiaries to different fields located along 180 km, among Choele Choel and Gral. Roca's cities.

INTRODUCTION Juan, his wife, Josefina de la Torre and seven children, live in the Half Valley from 1991. Recently they could bought their own place, that they work with absolute organic production approach.
Juan is an Agricultural Engineer of the University of La Plata (Buenos Aires province). After this he moved to Guatrache (La Pampa province), later to Catriel city and finally to the Half Valley of "Rio Negro" (Black River) in the homonimus province. He is beekeeper from his 13 years when he made a course after this he had their own beehives, following his Russian grandfather's tradition. During the time of university student, he continued with the beekeeping in "Villa Elisa" near "La Plata" city.
He always continued studying; not only the fruit plantations of the valley; also the autochthonous flora, to him who we have published some articles; as likewise on beekeeping and the relationship betwen bees, vegetables and the best pollination practice.
Colmenas polinizando peras en la Patagonia Argentina
This interview, introduces us in a much more dynamic branch of the beekeeping of what seems because, it participates of a multidisciplinary activity about the New Pollination Technologies.
We approach the following topics:
A SERVICE IS BORN
BEEHIVES TO POLLINATE

Antibiotics and Chemical products: The work of the "KIKA DE LA GARZA" Laboratoury - Raul Rivera - Weslaco - Texas - USA Raul Rivera during the Zacatecas Congress - Mexico
During the Beekeeping Upgrade Congress organized by the Mexican Association of Veterinary Doctors, Bees Specialists, in Zacatecas city, at the end of May, we interview the Chemical Raul Rivera.
Raul is one of the many professionals that works in the "Kika de la Garza" laboratory, in Weslaco, an American city next to Mexico.
This laboratory has among its awards to have verified the varroa resistance to the fluvalinate; the appearance of the africanized bees in the United States; the possible use of “coumaphos” and the detection of the new and great problem of the American beekeeping, the Scarab of the Beehive.
The article also makes reference to the new products and use methods that this laboratory develops to preserve the life of the bees and to avoid not wanted chemical residuals in honey.

Demands of the European Union - Interview: Dr. Cord Lüllmann - Buenos Aires - Argentina Cord Lullmann during his visit to Argentina - Catholic University of Buenos Aires
The manager director of the "Quality Service International GmbH" and the “Certification Service International GmbH”, in which 35 people work and it is the most important honey analysis laboratory in the world, he visited Argentina recently.
Cord Lüllmann, 45 years old, third director of the "Bee Products Analysis Institute", talk about the different services that it offers. This Institute, identified with the German city of Bremen, begin their work in 1954. He lecture during the Beekeeping Meeting organized by Mrs. Beatriz Achaval inside the program of the twentieth fifth Congress of AAPA (Argentine Association of Animal Production), in the place that the Argentine Catholic University occupies in Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires, the past October 4.
The Congress slogan was: "Argentine Honey, in the way of Differentiation", in wich was lectured, officials of SENASA and the Agriculture Secretary, as well as professionals and investigators of different investigation centers of the country and a producer that has been overturned recently to the organic production of honey.
Lüllmann, who is already equiping a Honey Institute in the Popular China Republic, found our country much more attractive to do some works than a few years before. During the interview, in the hall of the hotel where he stayed, he said to "Espacio Apicola" that the devaluation in Argentina can facilitate some relationship previously forbidden by that he considered very high costs.
Although the meeting had important reports of national investigators as Dr. Bertha Baldi and Jose Maidana, the presence of Lüllmann was the most expected.
In the report we approach the following topics:
RESIDUUMS IN HONEY
CHLORAMPHENICOL (The problem of the Chinese honey)
AMERICAN FOUL BROOD & TREATMENTS (Products and Residuums)
CHINESE RETURN TO THE MARKET
STABILITY OF THE REGULATION NECESSITY
WE PRESUME... BUT WHO COULD VERIFY IT?... (Referred to the environmental contamination in Central-European countries)
LIKE IT OR NOT... (Referred to the smaller beekeeping sector in front of other important lobbies)
MGO (Look out!)

Characteristic and Measures of the beehives in Argentina - Standard - Editorial work.
croquis de una colmena estandar
In the Argentina, in very short periods, so much people dedicated to the beekeeping change. Except a minority of established companies and others that come consolidating as capitalize having a productive unit to who we could define as “professional beekeepers”, because they live primarily off their production; so much people that begin and try luck in this activity, with a relatively low number of beehives, in few years they abandon or they make a stop leaving place to others.
Maybe with smaller frequency happens the same with carpentries, metallurgic factories, tailor's, suppliers, exporters, etc.
Sometimes we have mentioned that the reasons of the geometric growth of the honey production in the Argentina are basically two. The adaptation of races of governable bees and the standardization of the beehives.
For suggestion of Mr. Ricardo Miguel Prieto, QueenBees breeder of Junin, Buenos Aires province, we will publish in successive "Espacio Apicola" issues, the main ones characteristic and standardized measures of the beehive according to the generalized use in Argentina.
